We all know the feeling – piping, hot pizza or other food that looks too good not to eat right away. You take the first bite, and, OUCH! The numbing, burning sensation on the roof of your mouth is noticeable almost immediately, and the annoyance and pain doesn’t stop there.
When you burn the skin on the roof of your mouth, you create a fleshy, open wound that is prone to infection. Instead of letting the burn fester while you continue to eat and drink other foods, give your mouth a bit of a rest. Apply a corticosteroid paste, such as Oralone or Orabase, to the burned area. These pastes will help protect the burn and also promote faster healing. In the meantime, you can also limit the amount of very hot or very cold foods you eat while the burn is healing to help the burn heal faster.
