Question: Sometimes, I brush my teeth in the evening and then get hungry, so I want to eat a snack. But then I know I need to brush my teeth again. Is it safe to brush my teeth twice at night?
If done sporadically, there is really nothing wrong with brushing your teeth twice in one night. However, if you do this consistently, or find yourself wanting to brush your teeth multiple times every day, it could lead to some bigger problems.
Overbrushing your teeth might seem like a good thing, but it can actually cause sensitive teeth and receding gums. Vigorously brushing your teeth multiple times a day can wear down the enamel on the teeth and push back the gums. When the gums recede to expose the roots of the teeth, periodontal disease and cavities on the roots are more likely.
Brushing 2-3 times per day is recommended. If you need to brush more than that per day, make sure to use a soft-bristled brush and brush gently. Use floss and mouthwash to remove extra food particles that may be between teeth or on the tongue.
