Question: I have a dentist appointment this week for a routine cleaning. Should I brush my teeth before I leave my house to go to the dentist?
This is a great question that not that many people ask, but that many people think. Since you are going to the dentist to have your teeth cleaned, do you really need to brush, floss and use mouthwash before you leave for your dental appointment?
Our answer is yes – it’s a great idea to arrive to your dental appointment with a clean mouth. Brushing, flossing and using a fluoride mouthwash before your dental cleaning means that the dental hygienist won’t have as much debris to clean off your teeth. Less scaling to remove tartar and plaque will likely also be necessary if you’ve already cleared away loose food and debris. This means that you may not have as much gum irritation and soreness during or after the appointment.
Brush and floss your teeth twice a day, and don’t forget to do so before a dental appointment to help your dental hygienist and also help yourself!
