Your dentist tells you every time you go in for a cleaning or to have dental work done that flossing is so important to your teeth and overall mouth health. This advice is so deeply engrained in many minds that a natural question for most parents is – when should my children start flossing?
Start early with flossing so that your children will develop a healthy habit of flossing every time they brush. You can start flossing your children’s teeth for them when they have their baby teeth. Then, once their adult teeth start come in and fit closely together (usually between the ages of two and six) you can start to get your children into the habit of flossing regularly. As children develop hand-eye coordination and dexterity, parents should encourage flossing and help children to floss. By around age 10, children usually develop the ability to floss on their own.
Parents should communicate the importance of flossing early on and lead by example. Let your children know that you floss everyday and help your children to floss even before they are able to do it on their own. This helps children develop a good habit of flossing from an early age. Use floss that is soft and flexible for children sto avoid hurting their teeth and gums.
