Question: Some mornings I wake up, my mouth is extremely dry. What causes this?
There are a number reasons why your mouth could be excessively dry in the morning. Snoring, sleep apnea, and sinus inflammation are all common causes of dry mouth. Other reasons can include sugar or alcohol consumption before bed or nasal polyps that can obstruct airways. Some medications can also reduce the saliva that salivary glands produce, making the mouth drier overnight.
Naturally, salivary glands produce less saliva while you sleep. This combined with any one of the above issues can make for a parched mouth upon waking. The problem can be made worse if you are unable to breath through your nose while sleeping. Breathing through the mouth will desiccate the mouth and result in dry mouth in the morning.
